Box Office Battle: 'Dr. Seuss' The Grinch' looking to steal this week's top spot

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

OPENING THIS WEEKEND: Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's animated retelling of "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch," starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of The Grinch, is opening this weekend and expected to take the top spot at the box office. The Illumination Entertainment film, which grossed $2.2M in Thursday night previews, is expected to open at around $50M at in 4,141 theaters domestically.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY HOLDING STRONG: 21st Century Fox's (FOX, FOXA) "Bohemian Rhapsody," which was directed by Bryan Singer and stars Rami Malek as Queen singer Freddie Mercury, is expected to drop ~41% according to Box Office Mojo. That figure translates to the film, which opened last weekend in the top spot at the box office, earning around $30M this weekend, leaving it near $100M total gross since its release on November 2.

ALSO OPENING: Two other films are releasing wide this weekend -- Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Overlord" and Sony's (SNE) "The Girl in the Spider's Web." "Overlord," produced by J.J. Abrams, is a supernatural, R-rated horror film set during World War II. "The Girl in the Spider's Web" is a crime thriller adapted from the fourth novel of the Millennium series, starring Clarie Foy as Lisbeth Salander. The Millennium series of novels was started by author Stieg Larsson, but continued by author David Lagercrantz when Larsson passed away back in 2004.

OVERALL PROJECTIONS:

1. Dr. Seuss' The Grinch: $62M-$70M

2. Bohemian Rhapsody: ~$30M

3. Overlord: $10M-$13M

4. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: $9.5M-$10M

5. The Girl in the Spider's Web: ~$8.5M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include AT&T (T), Disney (DIS), and Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B).
